Skating Through Bodymore

"B-More State of Mind"

Really well-made skating documentary revealing the trials and tribulations of grinding in an infamously rough city with a lower profile skate scene. Best observation: Maybe the cops have better things to do than hassle skaters.

  • Is Baltimore really as cool as Baltimoreans want to think it is? Or should they all just get the hell over their city?

  • They should get the hell over their city. Somehow this whole 'Hey, Baltimore is kind of cool thing' morphed into a 'Hey, Baltimore is a top-tier, A-list city, except that it isn't, because outside of hanging out in Hampden (which is about 15 square blocks) there is nothing to do and nowhere to go. I'm a native, and I like Baltimore fine, but the endless obsession people have with pretending it's fucking 'Lost Generation' Paris or whatever is inane. Baltimore has a slightly more impressive scene for a city of it's size then you would expect. Period, end of story. Get the fuck over yourselves.

  • I was serious, Baltimore is a shithole. The fact that it's less of a shithole than Wilmington is faint praise indeed.

  • I like MusicalSocrates' "Lost Generation" line, but disagree with his harsh statement that Baltimore's a "shithole." Compared to what? Pittsburgh? Cleveland? Denver? Atlanta? Houston? All cities are parochial by nature, none more than New York, by the way, and back in the 70s and 80s, when Hampden was almost completely George Wallace territory, local artists, like Andrei Codrescu, also claimed that Baltimore was the "new" San Francisco.

  • Fair enough; there are other places in the world that are less interesting and culturally vibrant than Baltimore. But my point isn't that it's possible to find locales that offer less than fair Bawlmor; my point is that people living in Charm City tend to have a comically inflated sense of what Baltimore offers. It's a small pond, and even very moderate-sized fish tend to look big in it.

  • Hey, Socrates, there are a ton of awesome places to hang out at in Baltimore, and I actually don't count Hampden as one of them. First, there's Fells Point, then the Inner Harbor Pavilions, and the Charles, Senator, and Landmark theaters, and a ton more I don't have time to list. Not only is it fun, but it's also extremely historic, so stop criticizing one of the best city's in our nation.
