For a guy like myself who listens almost exclusively to sad bastard folk music, bringing a girl back to my place and putting together a quick make out mix can be a challenge. Putting my iTunes on shuffle is simply not an option. And since I’m no longer in middle school, a make-out mix better mean I'm getting laid tonight. And we al

l know when you're fumbling with a bra or working your way down on a girl, nothing kills the mood faster than some down-and-out middle-of-the-road Tom Waits song. Sometimes you can just put on a whole album and leave it at that. Sometimes I put on something kind of fast, loud, guitar-heavy—Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights, or some Broken Social Scene album ("Handjobs for the Holidays," anyone?), you know, for when you're feeling like doing it all, um... do people still say “hot and heavy”?

The Beatles’ "Why Don't We Do It In the Road" works pretty well too. But usually I like to keep things slow and passionate. What can I say? In that case, I go for something like Cat Power's Jukebox. Because, let's face it, Chan Marshall has the sexiest voice of the last 10 years. In no particular order, my Top 10 make-out songs:

"Get it While You Can"—Janis Joplin
Joplin—though herself in no way attractive—had the most gorgeously soulful voice of the 60s. She put it all into her music, and the ending refrain of "Oh, get it while you can/Get it, want it, need it, hold it…"

"Lover, You Should've Come Over"—Jeff Buckley
Considering I made out to this song the night I bought the album, I'd say it's a definite winner. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the best song on Grace, and some of his most impressive singing. Granted, the first verse is about Buckley watching a funeral procession, but when he gets to "Maybe I'm too young/to keep good love from going wrong./But tonight, you're on my mind/so you never know." …Beautiful.

"I Found a Reason" —The Velvet Underground
Whatever you do, please stick to the original Velvet Underground version. Cat Power's cover can only be listened to while crying naked in the shower, downing a fifth of Old Crow. Trust me, I know.

"Madame George"—Van Morrison
I would have gone for "Tupelo Honey" but I think it's required that you be over 40 to make out to that song. Besides, "Madame George" runs for like, I don't know, 27 minutes or something, so it gives you plenty of time to work with.

"Song to Bobby"—Cat Power
Over the past three or four years, Cat Power has made the successful transition from wrist-slitting lo-fi folkster (Moon Pix) to wonderful soul singer, picking up The Memphis Rhythm Band along the way. "Song to Bobby," the only original recording on 2008's Jukebox, is a soft ballad—guitar and piano playing back and forth, and Marshall sounding like she belongs in a smoky 40s jazz club.

"You Really Got a Hold on Me"—She and Him
Originally a song by The Miracles, which means people have been making out to it for about 50 years now. Hey, I'm not going to argue with that. Besides M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel's stripped down version allows them to offer up some lovely harmonies.

"A Girl in Port"—Okkervil River
A mid-tempo acoustic rocker with the opening lines "Let fall your soft and swaying skirt/Let fall your shoes, let fall your shirt." How could I not?

"My Winding Wheel"—Ryan Adams
Heartbreaker is the Ryan Adams album, and "My Winding Wheel" is by far my favorite song on the album. If the night goes sour, you can put on "Call Me On Your Way Back Home" and "Why Do They Leave" and hold your head in your hands.

"Hannah"—Ray Lamontagne
I tried not to include a Ray Lamontagne song—there's only so much NPR-flavored adult alternative that you can cram into one make out mix before you've got some questions to answer, but

Ray's voice is haunting on this song, and he doesn't go as sentimental as he does on most of the rest of Trouble.

"Beast of Burden"—Rolling Stones
Sorry to go all big-name mainstream on you for my number one, but "All I want is for you to make love to me" pretty much says it all. Probably my favorite Rolling Stones song, and other than maybe "Satisfaction," the most immediately recognizable. Besides, Mick Jagger's 70s hip swaggering pretty much defines sex.
